Online Counseling

You want to start counseling, but you’re struggling to find the time to carve out an hour, plus travel time, from your work day. Perhaps you have limited transportation available, or other challenges with mobility. You may already work remotely and feel comfortable using technology for a variety of needs. Perhaps you simply want to enjoy the benefits of therapy from the comfort of your home. Or you may be struggling to find the right fit in a local therapist, and feel hopeful about what I have to offer. Whatever your reason, online counseling is an excellent option for many people, for many reasons.

Online counseling, or “telehealth” has increased access to mental health services for many. Telehealth sessions are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform that can be used on most devices.

Frequently asked questions about telehealth:

Will online sessions be covered by my insurance?

Most insurance plans do cover telehealth sessions at the same amount as regular counseling sessions. You will need to call your insurance carrier to verify these benefits prior to starting services, and at the beginning of each new year.

What do I need to successfully participate in telehealth?

You need a device that supports video and audio, a strong internet or mobile data connection, and a private space where you can feel safe and comfortable for the duration of your session.

I don’t live in North Carolina. Can we work together via telehealth?

There is no straight-forward answer to this question. Some states do not regulate telehealth, or may share reciprocity with NC-licensed therapists. Others may have strict regulations against this. This question is best answered on a case-by-case basis.

What telehealth platform is used?

I use a platform that is integrated to my EHR (Electronic Health Record), called SimplePractice. It is really user-friendly, and even has an app you can download for better user experience when using a mobile device. It is HIPPA-compliant, meaning that it meets the standards of confidentiality and security mandated by my licensing board and federal law.

How do I pay for telehealth sessions?

My EHR (Electronic Health Record)  has an integrated billing system (operated by a service called Stripe)  that allows automated payments with the card information you put on file. It’s really convenient not to have to focus on exchanging payment as part of our session, and have that taken care of behind the scenes. Telehealth sessions are billed at the same rate as an equivalent therapy session in-person.
